The animated movie, a collaboration between Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal, earned $26.5 million on its opening day and $55 million on its first Friday in theaters, making it the biggest one-day gross for any movie so far in 2023.
The film has already surpassed the opening day earnings of other popular movies such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The movie is estimated to earn between $138 million and $197 million in its first five days in theaters.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also broken global box office records, generating over $377 million in the first five days of its premiere. The film has surpassed the box office total of other video game adaptations such as Sonic and Warcraft.
The movie’s success can be attributed to its impeccable quality and appeal to both young and old fans. The film features the voices of popular actors such as Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser.
Critics have been mixed on the film, but Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised The Super Mario Bros. Movie as “sheer animated fun”.
