How Can Paraphrasing Tools Improve Your Writing Skills?

Paraphrasing tools

Paraphrasing tools are great. They help you reword your content when you need to do it quickly, and they are always there to help improve your content’s quality every now and then.

But other than the immediate and short-lived benefits they provide, there’s actually some lasting benefit that you can enjoy from paraphrasing tools as well. You can use them to improve your writing skills.

If you can’t figure out how exactly that happens, don’t worry. In this post, that is what we’ll be talking about.

How to Use Paraphrasing Tools to Improve Your Writing Skills?

We’ll create a nice little segmentation to help you keep up with the discussion and understand each point properly.

1. Paraphrasing Tools Help in Vocab Building

So, this is one of the most common and straightforward benefits that you can get by using paraphrasing tools.

When you use paraphrasing tools, there are a lot of new words that you can get exposed to. Compared to manual paraphrasing, i.e., which involves a human, paraphrasing tools aren’t restricted when it comes to vocabulary. They simply pick a suitable synonym from the millions stored in their database and use it in place of the original word.

Here, is what it looks like:

Paraphrasing tools

In the image above, we’ve used Paraphraser, a popular online paraphrasing tool that happens to work on AI algos, due to which the changes it makes are smart and coherent.

Now, as you can see in the image, the words used in the input are hardly utilized in the output. The tool completely changed the wording (not the meaning, though) and gave an output that pretty much tells the same story as the input.

Using this same example to show you can use paraphrasing tools for learning new words and building your vocabulary, we’re like to point out the following changes:

  1. We don’t know how they got there” was changed to “We are unsure of the origin of their presence.
  2. How they’re still alive” was changed to “How they are managing to remain alive.

In both changes, words like “origin”, “remain”, and “unsure” are all new additions to the input.

One good thing about learning new words this way is that the meaning of the synonyms – even if they are completely new and unknown – is not lost on the user. Since the user understands the meaning of the input, the meaning and context of the new words is automatically understood.

Consider this example.

The child was throwing a tantrum.

The child was being obstreperous.

If a person were to change the first sentence into the other one using a paraphraser, they would automatically understand the word “obstreperous” to mean “boisterous” or “likely to throw a tantrum”.

2. Learn Better Sentence Formation

Moving on, another way in which paraphrasing tools can help improve your writing skills is by showing you different ways to form sentences. Mind you, this is something restricted to only the high-end tools, i.e., the ones that use advanced algorithms and technologies.

Instead of talking about it and explaining it through text, let’s just give you an example of how this works.

Here is a piece of text that we will be paraphrasing with an online tool.

The confusion spawned by the wrong information peddled by the peddlers in the uniforms led to the conflagration of the ruined houses in the outlying areas of the small town.”

Yep, I know it’s terrible, but we’re making a point here.

So, now we will paraphrase this content using a high-end AI paraphraser. For the purpose of this example, we will be using the one by Editpad.

Here are the results provided by the tool:

Now, considering the abysmal quality of the input we provided, the tool did a pretty good job. And the output does serve to help us illustrate our point.

In the input, the words at the beginning of the sentence are “The confusion spawned by the wrong information”. On the other hand, the tool changed them to “Confusion caused by false information”.

Even in this minor change, there are a number of things to note:

  1. The number of words is reduced in the output, whereas the meaning conveyed is the same.
  2. The word “false” is more contextually in line with the word “information”. The tool automatically fixed this.
  3. The use of the word ‘The’ at the start of the sentence is somewhat unnecessary. The tool automatically removed it from the output.

Now, if the user were to study the changes made by the tool, they would understand how it made the content concise and better flowing by altering the word choices and sentence structure.

3. Helping in Learning Different Types of Writing Styles

Once again, this is something that only applies to smart paraphrasing tools, i.e., the ones that work on AI algorithms and provide intelligent results.

Let’s explain this one properly, shall we?

Now, different paraphrasing tools available on the internet have different modes. Each of these modes provides a different output than the other. A lot of tools utilize this gimmick to introduce the paid plans, i.e., they lock certain modes behind a paywall, making them only accessible to paid users.

So, when using a tool like this, you can paraphrase the same piece of content using different modes and then look at the changes made.

Take the example of the paraphrasing tool by Editpad discussed above. As you may have noticed in the image above, there are four different modes, including Smart, Improver, Formal, and Smooth.

Using the Formal style would help you learn how to write in a crisp style, whereas the Smooth style would help you learn how to write casually. Here is an example:

And that wraps it up.

In the first instance, paraphrasing tools are generally used to rework a piece of content to improve its quality or eliminate accidental plagiarism, etc. However, as we have extensively discussed in this post, you can also use them to improve your writing skills.

Hope you learned something here and you’ll learn something more using the methods described above
